The cheap case being softer is going to absorb more impact. A hard case just transfers the shock right to your phone. Hybrid cases are the best, soft layer covered by a hard layer.

Honestly, I feel like apple is purposely making their phone case not as protective as cheaper cases because they want your phone to get damaged, so we buy the upcoming new phones.
