Nvidia's RTX 4070 is a complicated card.. on one hand it is the best value we've seen in years, but on the other everyone is still mad.

Feels like a 3080 renamed 😂

    Sunko

That’s how GPUs have worked for a LONG time though? Next generation 70 series is roughly the same performance as previous 80 series. Now with almost half the TDP and DLSS3

    Pinak Miku

@Momo Kozuki 3080 new has been unavailable at reasonable prices since last 3 months. Only used 3080 in market.

    V

@ben weston the tariffs from the trump presidency that ended 2 years ago?
By inflation did you mean deflation? Because the price of raw materials and memory has been in a freefall for a good year now.

    V

    @ben weston 👏👏👏👏

    V

@Sunko except the 70 series was always cheaper

Sheo

Who would’ve thought the 40 series was going to make the 30 series look a lot more desirable.

    Mark Manderson

almost makes it acceptable how much some of us spanked for a 3080ti….

    James Macari

    Idk man I got a 4090. I’m one of those guys. Upgraded from a 2080Ti. What’s the performance of a 4090 like compared to a 3090?

    Gabriel Vieira

    real

    Death-777

True, that’s literally the reason I went out to buy a 3090, for the cost on the used market it was sooo much more affordable as a high end card than anything 40 series and still is.

    Mark Manderson

@James Macari the 4090 is a beast, i have a 3080ti and the 4090 wizzes all over it at 4k my mate had identical rig to mine and 3080ti, new rig with 4090 strix and his benchmarks are 2-3x higher at 4k. 2080ti to 4090 is a huge bump, bet your jaw hit the deck first fps test. 😀

Thanks a lot for including the Arc 770 on this. Got one a few months back and all the data out there is out of date, so being able to compare it to other newer gpus is nice.
Really glad to be able to use this review as an updated Arc 770 update.
(different typography for intel arc in the graphs makes it stand out. It’s a fetaure not a bug)

    UltraNoob

Not to mention the driver updates performance uplift from Intel making them better than at launch

    Warren

I really like my A770. Glad I got it.

Why didnt they include the 7900xtx or am I blind

killzone866

This is basically a what a 4060 should be.

    killzone866

    @sebas Stein thats pretty perfect.

    Erik

@MaxRepFitGM The 4070Ti was the cancelled 4080 12GB. Saying that this is a 4060 makes no sense, since it has always been positioned as a 70 class, so the 60 card will be slower. You should judge on performence/dollar not on performence/name.

    PairusDragonoid

    4050*

    DKTronics70

@chy. Yes, they can be as greedy as they want. But then, PC gamers have a choice, don’t buy them, Period. Buy a console, a PS5, or Xbox Series X, then you’ll no longer need to care about upgrades, or Nvidia. When the PC gaming market collapses, we can all look to, and blame, Nvidia.

    rustler08

@Alex Barely faster on in some games, and you’re SOL on VRAM. I wouldn’t be proud of that purchase when you could have had a superior 6900 or 6950 XT.

BruceKarrde

Having an RTX2070 seems still like a solid option for my workload; Factorio, an MMO every once in a while, video editing, and basic programming. But damn, holding a freshly unboxed GPU is one of the few joys in life 😀

    Donnerwamp

2080Ti, and I have to say, I’d love an upgrade for VR stuff. Aside from that, I’d be happy with a 2070. DLSS is amazing for prolonging anGPUs life.

    KoilBooly

With FG a 4060 or even 4050 may be good enough. But this is only the beginning. Nvidia clearly isn’t committed to making better hardware

    PrussianJæger

Make sure you get a Super.

    IbanezPlayer124

@Dislexic Potato same case here. My 2070 straight up cannot handle modern games at 1440p. Even in Forza Horizon 5 it struggles to stay above 70 FPS.

    Welshmanshots

My 2070 non super has been a blast for the 3 years I’ve used it, really don’t many issues even in games today its still a solid card.

Nicolai Sørensen

I like how Linus and the guys over at LTT have taken benchmarking to such a level that we only need 1 to be able to compare. Including all the way back to the 10-series is brilliant, guys. Keep this up.

    Formulaic 78

@JElkk03 well at least you didn’t have a 2080ti. That’s gonna hurt even more to keep up with the same tier.

@Matt ward I think he’s saying that Nvidia/AMD/Intel often lie about performance.

    Philip Worthington

Hmm, my 970 isn’t on this graph. Maybe time for a new PC.

    rustler08

@JElkk03 So, go buy yourself a 6800 XT, 6900 XT, or a 6950 XT. Any of those can be had, even new, for the same or less than the rip-off 4070

Merano

1080 is one hell of a card , still continues to haunt newer card

    Travis Hurst

Still using my 1080 as well.

creature2711

Each review that comes out of the 40 series has me scared I made a mistake buying a 3080 this past Christmas. This one had me specially concerned since it was supposed to be the more comparable one to the 3080. Glad to see again that I made the right call. I’m beyond happy with my purchase (specially since I came from a 1060 hahaha) now that I see they perform basically the same for the use I give them.

    Mes gots its

Same here. I have zero remorse for buying a 3080 at MSRP even this far into the 4000-series. I have a feeling it will serve me well all the way through the 5000-series too.

This makes me feel even better about upgrading to a 7900 XT (at $800) instead of waiting to see how the 4070 performs.

    Tan Yi Ge Ken

i got the 4070ti tuf OC for ~$300 off, its…only alright, doesnt even feel good at that price. UV + mem OC gave me 5% more perf for 200w use (down from 270-280w stock OC)

    [ARC] Birdman

@Hank Schrader yeah. I feel like buying a whole new high end GPU right after buying high end because you want your 4k Oled to go from max settings to max settings with ray tracing is absurd 😐

    [ARC] Birdman

    @RobTheGreat21 stonks 📈

    iNexusVitto

For 800$ a 7900xt ? I would have bought it instantly and never thought about it again!
Here in Italy i spend 1000€ for that but I’m still happy with my choice.

    Eplugplay

Me too, makes me feel wonderful about my 4090 FE I got for MSRP at best buy! 🙂

Mike D

I miss the days when the 70 tier was just the 80 tier from the last generation at a lower price, possibly with a different RAM amount. Really kind makes me feel better about the 2080 I bought off a friend for $150 a few weeks ago.

    Jacob Turk

Good snag. I got my 2080 new and it still performs like a champ.

Luke Skywalket

I’ve been almost considering upgrading from my current 1660 Super, but this is just reminding me how much of a bad idea that would be. I managed to get my current card for around $225 new back in 2021 (Yes I’m well aware of how incredibly lucky I was), and I really don’t think I’m going to be able to find a comparable deal anytime soon with prices the way they are.

    mexicanoaao

Former 1660 super user here, if you can get your hands on a well priced 6700XT, you would be well suited. I upgraded to an RX6600 and I’m comfortably handling all my games on 1440p mid to high settings at 60+ FPS, even streaming without any major issues. Or an rtx 3060 is also a very viable and fantastic card

RiddleTime

It would be nice to have the 6950 xt included in your graphs, although the 6800 xt is already a very good comparison.

F?СК MЕ. ТАP ON MY Р1С

    Àaww

    RobTheGreat21

They need to add the 6900xt

    SirWolf2018

@RobTheGreat21 They need to add all cards dating back to 1999 (GeForce 256’s release date).

    rustler08

That would have embarrassed NVIDIA too much. Considering I’ve seen the 6950 XT for $630-650 the past few days, and it’s roughly 15% faster than a 6800XT (and even faster if you use More Power Tools to give it more juice), you can extrapolate the downright puppy-kicking that the 4070 faces.
The funniest part is that they included the 6800XT, but you can easily get one for $520 on sale making this a completely unfair comparison in spite of price comparison. Yet, in spite of being the cheaper card the 6800 XT still dominates the poor 4070.

Thetheoryguy

What’s even more crazy is how the A770 can hang with these cards.

Yea but Intel needs to work on the software before i even think about buying anything from them

    Spartan265

@Welshmanshots  They have been. Still needs more work but since launch they have done a bunch of updates to it.

    Rahat Azim

Did you watch the video? The only place it was even comparable was photoshop. Every where else it performs worse than a 3060 lol. What sort of fanboy copium is this?

M4rio21

Got me a 3080 for $400 used a few weeks ago. Looks like I made the right choice 😁 the 4070 looks solid when looking at the power efficiency and frame Gen.

Alucard

I love how the psu standard got changed to accommodate power spikes and then the next generation of gpus stopped having power spikes

Zach Denney

you know one of my favorite things about LTT videos? clear, and proper volume level audio.

04:14 “This test is very CPU bound, but it is still funny how well Arc did.” – shout out to the editors for this one.

penguindrummaster

I really wish more outlets would remind audiences of how expensive GPUs have become. Nvidia -60 cards used to be budget-friendly between $199-249 USD. These days, a 3060 goes for $300-350 which is the price point of past -70 cards. It used to be that only novelty cards like the TITAN or ARES dual-GPU cards were $1,000 USD or more, but now that has become normal for flagship-level cards.

It just really feels unfair how the market has shifted so far from what was expected just 10 years ago

Kegan Pleadwell

Feels good being a 6800xt user, saving several hundred dollars over a NVIDIA card and seeing the better or similar non rt performance is a great feeling 🙂

tundra_no_caps

Buying the 6800 XT for $520 was such a smart call.
One happy Pascal to AMD upgrader!

P.S. I undervolted mine, at gaming benchmarks, it outperforms out of the box performance, while averaging ~200W.
