I love how Marques released this live while Google are presenting it at IO😂

    Unbox therapy did the same

    Mrwhostheboss did the same

That’s standard really. Traditional media (i.e. the ones that write online articles) have been doing that for ages. It’s scheduled to the minute.

It’s this magically thing called NDA release.

    WonderMePartyStrip

    Haha true.

Even though I’m not the target audience, I am curious of the device itself and wondering how well it performs and runs. Can’t wait for the full review

    aaw!!

    Ganbly

G2 chip… I think you know how it will end… 🙂 Not faster than my pixel 7 pro that already lags a lot…

    Username1

@Ganbly Battery life would be horrendous. Samsung went snapdragon (tsmc) for their fold, vivo and others too. I imagine Pixel will be the same but with tensor branding slapped over it

In my opinion given the design choice, specs and entire outlook of the folding phone landscape, google isn’t gonna ship many of these pixel folds, it’ll probably be in their second attempt that they see some improvement, provided they refine their approach, cause this fold is asking a lot for what it offers

I’m also concerned with build quality.
The Pixel 7 Pro is decent, but I had better built phones before.
I don’t know how the moving parts will hold up.

And then I heard very bad stories about warranty, at least here in Germany, for the Pixel, so I wouldn’t give Google that much money for their first attempt.
I wouldn’t even consider it if it was half the price, not worth the potential hassle.

    Blue_09

yeah the 2nd gens are always better, especially foldables

My 3 bedroom townhouse is $1,800 dollars a month . I remember over 20 years ago, the cell phones weren’t that expensive now fast forward over 20 years later cell phones is over $1,000 dollars also a arm and a leg . Oh my time has changed !!!!

    Dominic Irla

@Cartier231 There are also now many $500 phones that would have seemed as a super high end phone a couple years ago

    amythistxue1

I mean it might get some traction in the US, just because the foldable market is literally just the Samsung Z fold, which it does fix one of the biggest problems I had with the Fold phones, which was an uncomfortably narrow outer screen, but on the flip side, the same processor and a smaller batter than the Pixel 7 Pro who’s battery life is already pretty mediocre is really not inspiring much confidence

personally I’m going to give this a pass, first to see if Google can actually leverage this to get more 3rd party app developers to better optimize their apps for android tablets and also to see how this pans out, big things being the battery and hinge mechanism, but who knows maybe when the Pixel Fold 2 (or whatever they end up calling it) comes out I’ll be looking to pick one up

Mackie

I love how it’s the same shape as the 3ds. I’m sure that you could emulate some 3ds or and ds game on this device really well

    Bolt

The DS and gameboy advance SP were legendary. I miss when hardware was cool

    Renegade

You’re in luck! This is possible on z fold at the moment, pen and all.

    Renegade

On a side note, the pixel fold doesn’t have any kind of pen support 😭
That’s kind of a deal breaker for me at that price point. Since working with a pen on that form factor is just amazing.

    Welcome Creator

Yep, been doing this on Samsung Folds for the last few years. Welcome to the party

    RAMA KRISHNA

Here our bedroom cost is $100 per month, so this phone is lot more than expensive for us than u guys who pays monthly rent $2000, its just a month rent for u, its like one and half year rent for us, why the people in other countries feel these prices so expensive when they are already earns very good amounts , our salaries are like $400 per month and urs is like $4000 per month, still u feel those phones expensive , thats bullshit, cuz if u feel its expensive, we feel it as luxury from heaven 😅, think differently perspective changes..

Dan

The bezel looks fine, it seems to work with that phone probably due to the screen size once opened, it doesn’t feel like the bezel is reducing the screen significantly

A1ex

Look forward to picking it up for 1/3 of the price in a couple of months once the fold 5 is out

Cellunlocker.net

Interesting, can’t wait for the full review soon. Don’t really mind the bezels as well but dang pretty pricey at $1799.

@Cartier231 at least rents cheaper now!

    Daniel Hingco

I thought they would undercut competition like they usually do

Really wish we’d get that dock on the normal pixels aswell without having super small scaling, it looks so useful for multitasking.

    Eddy M.

There is the smart suggestions which basically does something similar.

    benjamin smith

@RAMA KRISHNA bro ur comment is kinda irrelevant to the discussion here lol

    benjamin smith

@RAMA KRISHNA also let me tell you something about ‘cost of living’. Yes you earn more in the US but the cost of a lot of stuff is also more like food, labour charge for any service, education, medical treatment if you don’t have insurance etc. All of these are significantly cheaper in India.

    Bread Cat

    @RAMA KRISHNA go away 🗣🗣🗣🗣

Luis Higareda Jr

How does video look in landscape with it open? This is probably my main drawback with exploring foldables–would love to hear anyones thoughts/experience on this?

Andrew Hobbs

I like the concept, I think I want to see it mature and proven over a generation or two before I jump in. Probably going Pixel 8 Pro next.

    EG

@RAMA KRISHNA I mean that does make sense, you can be pretty rich in your country and yet these devices can be extremely expensive. All about CPi and PPP

    EG

They need to introduce a pen like samsung does with their ultra ranges. It will be a lott better then

    Ghous Mughal

@RAMA KRISHNAif u wasnt born rich not your problem, but if u aint rich now thats ur problem, and secondly but u dont really have a buy a new phone if u dont want too, anyways 80-85% phones are financed so no most of people dont buy them out right, we upgrade and pay half after a year or payments

    reskin33

@RAMA KRISHNA I play the smartest game with phones. What you do is buy a used phone 1 year old. Why? Bc the 1year old used phone is 75% cheaper than that phone brand new at MSRP. For example: a brand new 800$ phone after 1 year is 200$. And I always buy/pay in full price a used phone 1 year old bc that’s the smartest thing to do.

DctrGizmo

I’m really interested to see how Google will optimize apps for the phone.

    AlTheEngineer

I think its going to mostly suck, they don’t have a good track record when it comes to “promised software” releases.

    Maxime Bret

@RAMA KRISHNA Your comment makes absolute non sense. It’s not because something is more affordable for somebody that it makes its price suddenly okay.

    Pako Diale

    They won’t

SlickPixel

Would actually love to give this a try but that price is nuts, I definitely prefer the form factor of this over the Z Fold 4

    Rohan

Z fold 4 is anyday better than pixel fold

    Cosmic Twilight

z fold 4 is leagues ahead of this

    Jay

@Cosmic Twilight Because it’s the 4? And this is their first? Also did you even test or see any testing of this phone? Stop being sheep

    frokfrdk

    Lol Samsung fans

G Four Gadget

Finally another real competitor in the global market for Samsung Galaxy Z Fold series. Hopefully this pushes them to improve more on their foldables, and not just minor upgrades each year. 🤞

    Gabriel Martinez

Google would actually have to make a competing foldable for that to happen…this abomination (Pixel Fold) is horrrrrrrrible.

localised Charge

tbh I wasnt much expecting much from google from their 1st folding phone, but it’s nice to see they’re trying some new things.

    Robstrap

These arent new things anymore. They haven’t been for years

    Blitz_Studios

    @Robstrapwhich ones

    RKC

What was Google’s first foldable phone? Pretty sure this is the first one, no?

Angus Uchiha

i just realized something about the folding phone architecture. this type of design allows for binocular cameras. this would probably require a “Depth Perception Mode” in the camera app. the photos and videos from this would be absolutely insane!!

the “Depth Perception Mode” would use the external cameras. the external selfie camera and one of the main 3 external cameras on the camera bump. probably the actual Main Camera. and this would also probably require the phone use its AI to work properly.

    RaiOkami

They could ditch the inner selfie camera to save some cost and plug that there too. I doubt they could invest a module that matches the main camera but that seems like a good idea to investigate.

    Mohow

@RaiOkami this means you can’t video call using the main screen

    Ajay

    Binacular camera ? wdym ?

    Angus Uchiha

@RaiOkami unnecessary. my idea was that- here i’ll edit my comment

    Angus Uchiha

@Ajay binocular basically means “2 visual inputs”. think ‘binocular vision’ (which is what we and most other animals have), or ‘binoculars’.

Nat Voisey

Would love a foldable comparison.

Hersey Hawkins

The bezels look fine. Love the surface duo form factor.

    Kotar

That’s what it reminded me of. That same feeling also left a bit in my stomach. Google is known for abandoning its off the cuff devices.

Shtöpfl

It’s a very pretty foldable that’s for sure and I love the slightly wider form factor 😍👍🏻

Creativepic NL

I’d say one for the pile. Don’t get me wrong, it looks great. Probably performs great too with the wide form factor but there will probably be quite some negative impressions after further testing. Especially on the battery in combination with tensor 2 – side of things. The price is ridiculous. I should’ve start my comment with that 😅.

Max Overpower

It’s likely that they’ll be trying to get an under display selfie camera to an acceptable level of quality in time for the Pixel Fold 2 release, which will allow them to significantly shrink the symmetrical top and bottom bezels of the inner screen, and possibly make them uniform with the side bezels. Google has a patent for under display camera tech, so they’ve been considering it for a while.
